Samuel Ward Arts and Technology College is a small and dynamic school situated in the west of Suffolk about 20 miles from Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds. It is committed to raising achievement of each individual but also to educating the whole child. We have five designations with Technology College, Visual Arts and Media, and Vocational as specialisms together with Leading Edge and Training School status. The school is committed to improvement and quality: we were in the top 50 of the DCSF’s most improved schools recently and achieved an ‘Outstanding’ OFSTED in 2008.
It is welcoming to the community, accessible to business and has close links with educational research centres. At its core Samuel Ward is all about learning for pupils, parents and staff. Our research community was consolidated as a cohesive group in September 2008, building on research carried out by individuals. Teaching staff, non teaching staff and Governors are involved. Research areas this year include developing problem solving skills in Maths, enhancing group work in English, looking at the impact of Advanced Skills Teachers on learning, and looking at strategies for boosting boys’ achievement.
